Campaign Now Ongoing
Under the American Sun (Camp Roxas Film Project) has surged forward in the last seven years with the support of local and federal grants, private donations from the Camp Roxas community and personal funds. The project requires at least $50,000 for post-production costs to expand the film to 60-minute documentary. All funds donated to this film project will be used toward the completion of the film.

Your donation will make you a part of a rare undocumented history of the Filipino labor experience which someday will be heralded as a pioneering historical work in the Asian-Pacific experience. (Campaign ends Dec. 20, 2013)

First off, thank you for the project you are working.  My father was part of Camp Roxas but I know very little of the camp.  You have given me some awareness.

The manifest shows my father as Thomas Ascurra-----with 2 R’s. However, he spelled his name with 1 R, as you see in my name.  Could this be a typo?  I have done some genealogy on my family and have seen both spellings.  The name Ascurra according to my research, originated in South America around Peru or Argentina.

The film research team announces that a partial listing of Camp Roxas passenger manifests is now available on line at http://www.camproxas.com/Manifests.html (password: agat2013). This is work in progress with disclaimer: "These manifests show only a small part of the Filipino laborers immigrating to Guam and are considered INCOMPLETE."

10 a.m. - About the film title: Under the American Sun.
On one level, a reference to the lyric: "Planting rice is never fun, something, something til the set of sun." It was a song taught to Filipinos by Americans in post Spanish american war era to teach them English. It presents a condescending perspective of the industrious nature of the Filipino, but was widely adopted into the culture nonetheless. The American Sun then is a wry twist on the relationship of the Filipinos and Americans. Are we at the mercy of America to develop further as a global nation? Or we a tool for America to develop strategically? Either way, the opportunities it has provided directly or indirectly for us has been tenfold. On the other hand, have we also sacrificed our unique Filipino identity and replaced it with a hybrid sense of nationalism? - Gino Provido
